Nancy Ouchida Howells

Nancy Ouchida Howells

Nancy believes that beautiful letters, words, thoughts and actions combine for the betterment of the human spirit. She explores stretching the traditional idea of letterforms by using colour planes,, body movement, fragmentation, collage, etc. and create word paintings.

She graduated with a MA degree in Design and worked making an IBM exhibition for Charles Eames, auto convention exhibits for Mazda Motors, many computer brochures and manuals, health food packaging, etc. After many years in commercials graphics, she sought more personal projects such as: making a handwritten and illustrated book telling a little girl she was adopted, celebration books for weddings, anniversaries and birthdays, writing favourite poems and quotes, letters for film.

Nancy was born in the USA of Japanese parents, and her marriage to David Howells brought her to Sussex. She is an Honorary Fellow of Calligraphy & Lettering Arts Society (CLAS) and an Approved tutor for CLAS and SSI, Full member of Letter Exchange. She has taught for five USA International Calligraphy conferences and in Germany, Belgium, UK and Japan. Her work has been commissioned by the Crafts Council, in a permanent exhibition at the Fritzwilliam Museum and in the Klingspor Museum, Germany. She wrote a book: Easel-does-it: Calligraphy.
