A few years ago, while I was studying at Herefordshire College of Art and Design, I daubed acrylic, smoothed on pastels, crumbled charcoal and gouged and stamped lino prints endlessly. There was always one medium that I always returned to however. Watercolour and ink, with which I developed my illustrative style, although at the time I had no idea in which direction it would eventually lead me! Skip forwards to more recent times, settled happily in Shoreham (add one husband,…

I began as a cartoonist and was published in Private Eye etc. I am self taught and have developed as an artist in local art groups. My main inspiration comes from my observations of life! Three years ago I traveled to New Orleans somewhere I had always wanted to visit and where my perspective on life and art was changed forever. I would call myself an Expressionist and I like to tackle drawing and painting Portraits, Still Life and Illustration.

Paul Michaelides (known as Aris)

My interest in paintings started at an early age whilst living in my native country of Cyprus. A Greek family that were close friends had three children, all of them talented, one of which was an artist a few years older than me. I would accompany him on his painting trips and was fascinated by the blank canvas, the scene, and then the developing picture. He then went on to study abroad and is now the Leading Sceneographer in Cyprus theatre. We are still in touch. However, as…

Originally trained as a Stage Designer, for many years I worked in costume design and production for the two London opera houses. Recently I have been creating paintings, embroideries and textile based pieces in response to my immediate environment; the river Adur in all its changing moods, the tidal ebb and flow under the looming presence of the South Downs and even the  sun-baked streets of Shoreham. Most recently I have been  working in acrylics making paintings and drawin…

Much of my subject matter is taken from the natural and urban landscape around me, the places I have encountered. I have always been interested in buildings, their interior and architectural details, their place in the landscape and the associations we have with them I usually begin a drawing upon a ground of dark pigment so that I can emphasise tonal contrasts and gradually lighten areas of the composition to create form and add detail. I love the atmospheric effects that a…

Most of my work is based on inspiration from modernist architecture and industrial design. Also I`m interested in the contrast between rural and the urban landscape.
