Susan Pennock

Reservoir No. 2 (pastel, conte crayon)

My subject matter is inspired by the natural and urban landscape, the elements within these and the way they change over time, and how these are influenced by the subsequent associations we have with them through our experience and observation.

I often begin a piece of work on a prepared ground of dark pigment to emphasise the tonal contrasts and gradually lighten areas of the composition to create form and add detail – adding and removing material is intrinsic to the subject itself and the composition.

I studied a Fine Art degree in Edinburgh where I was able to explore different ways of working and expressing ideas, including drawing, painting, constructed textiles and installation. Since then I have continued to make and show my work as part of group exhibitions in Sussex and further afield.
