Paul Michaelides (known as Aris)
My interest in paintings started at an early age whilst living in my native country of Cyprus. A Greek family that were close friends had three children, all of them talented, one of which was an artist a few years older than me. I would accompany him on his painting trips and was fascinated by the blank canvas, the scene, and then the developing picture. He then went on to study abroad and is now the Leading Sceneographer in Cyprus theatre. We are still in touch.
However, as I grew up football took over for many years until one day I had a thought: what is my legacy? When my time is up, what have I left behind? That was the moment I thought ‘Right, I shall revive my interest in painting’. I studied books, went to galleries, fell in love with the Dutch masters – particularly the still-life painters and began painting again. I retired early and can devote more time to my passion. I think this has helped me enormously.
