Summer is here!

Summer Workshops and Autumn Term dates

I believe that Art is for All, and aim my workshops to be accessible to all comers, whatever your experience; from beginners seeking the confidence to begin, to more experienced practitioners wanting to deepen their connection to their work. Whether you are looking for regular classes, in drawing, painting, and sketchbook based projects, or one off workshops and short courses. Something for everybody. As my teaching practice grows in this way, so too does my own art practice, often directly feeding into the workshops. Most notably my recent Drawing with Awareness programme, incorporating mindfulness and meditation into the workshops. My personal ambition – to carry on making art until I am 80 and beyond, taking others with me as I go – so it is an inspiration to see there are 2 major retrospectives by octogenarians on in London this summer (see info below).

I am currently nearing the end of my teaching year, and am looking forward to a summer holiday, with family trips to Italy and Norway. Teaching-wise, this summer includes a NEW 2 day Painting Workshop in East Devon, which will be a wonderful opportunity to revisit this part of the world, and teach in a new venue based around creativity and wellbeing: Creative Beings

I am also planning a 2 day painting workshop in September on the Isle of Wight. Followed by my annual 5 day retreat at Sussex Prairie Gardens in October (last 2 spaces available – info and booking details below).

In the Autumn term my regular fortnightly courses in Shoreham and Arundel will begin again in October (see details and dates below), and I will be scheduling additional Drawing with Awareness days, exploring the creative process with mindfulness and meditation, as these have proved so popular. Finally, working alongside Emily Ball at the Seawhite Studio this summer has given us ample opportunity to plan ahead for the amazing courses we are planning to teach together next year. These will be announced shortly in a forthcoming newsletter, or you can have a sneak peak on Emily’s website here.

This course is suitable for all, painters and non- painters alike. During the workshop you will be encouraged to experiment with pastels, inks, acrylic paint, acrylic mediums, painting tools and techniques to produce a series of abstract paintings. By building up marks, layering, rubbing and scraping back, you will discover the magic of acrylic paint and mixed media, and how exciting it can be, free from the constraints of representation.

Sussex Prairie Gardens

From Sketchbooks into Paint – 5 day retreat
Wed 2 – Sun 6 October 2019 at Sussex Prairie Gardens near Henfield
10am – 2pm Cost £290

Combining 2 hugely popular courses into one intensive five day course. Working in situ, in this amazing and beautiful garden, you will spend 2 days working directly into sketchbooks, followed by 3 days painting. Daily meditation and breathing exercises in this idyllic garden setting will ensure it is a fully inspirational and relaxing experience. Connecting the breath and body to the art of painting will help loosen up, focusing on the process rather than the product, being surprised by what emerges, rather like watching a garden grow. And of course the homemade cakes from the cafe will help too.
Bring your own materials, (concertina sketchbooks can be bought from the tutor £6)

Drawing for All in Shoreham

Drawing for All
Huntingdon Hall, Shoreham by Sea BN43 6WF
2-5pm on alternate Thursdays
17, 31 Oct 14, 28 Nov, 12 Dec 2019
Cost: £175

This course can be an introduction to drawing, or a refresher for those with experience. All the sessions are based partly on observation, giving you the skills for improving your ‘eye’. Alongside this, there will be room for experimentation and appreciating that drawings can emerge out of sometimes quite ‘messy’ starting points. This is to help get over the fear of the blank page, the fear that you may ‘go wrong’ – there is no such thing as a wrong drawing: a drawing is a drawing, a line is a line, a mark is a mark. Each term there is a set theme. Next term has yet to be decided.

Painting from Sketchbooks – A popular course for those interested in maintaining a fresh approach in their paintings. You will be working in oils or acrylics from experimental studies that you will have brought with you for the workshop. Ideally suited to those students who have been on one of my sketchbook courses, whether on the I.O.W or elsewhere. Brook is on the South coast of the island, close to the beach, if you need fresh inspiration, or come with a sketchbook already full with marks and ideas.

Drawing with Awareness

Drawing with Awareness: Drawing, Mindfulness and Meditation
Location and dates to be announced
10am -4.30pm Cost: £75

These one day retreat style workshops combine my interest in mindfulness and meditation with the creative process. In these workshops you will be invited to draw with your eyes shut, respond to the breath, draw by touch, and listen to your materials. Engaging in the process rather than the product, you can expect to come away feeling relaxed, awakened, and revitalised in your approach to drawing, a kind of yoga of art.

Autumn sessions will include:
– Drawing with Ink and Water
– The Touch of Clay Earth
– Colour, Light, Paint, Autumn Fire
– Poetry and Drawing

Materials will be provided so you can come with nothing, and go home with nothing but the experience.

The Creative Journey continues with the Sketchbook theme, focusing for the Autumn term on Travel – maps, memories, souvenirs, journalling, photos, fantasies….. Each week you will be given exercises and processes to experiment with materials and ideas, which can be worked on in your concertina sketchbooks between sessions. By the end of the term you will have a sketchbook bulging with images and ideas that could form the basis of a painting project in the New Year. (From January 2020 the Creative Journey course will include Painting from Sketchbooks, welcoming all comers, but especially those who have been on the sketchbook courses this year)

The Serpentine Gallery

The Serpentine presents the first UK solo exhibition of works by Luchita Hurtado. The exhibition traces the trajectory of Hurtado’s expansive, 80-year career and reveals the scale, experimentation and playfulness of her impressive oeuvre.
